Steve will be going home soon after Nov. 18 sometime and will need help with some home remodeling - are you knowledgeable about plumbing, home repairs or landscaping? I will be trying to organize a work party in the next couple of weeks at Steve's house to clear the path along the side of the house and build a ramp up the back steps to his bedroom. ALso he might need his bathroom remodeled somehow. Anyone with knowlege of this type of thing is helpful - but we need help clearing the yard as well - weedwackers etc. and to haul out some junk from the back yard. Contact me via the link to my e-mail if you are available/able etc.

If folks can really ban together and pull this off in the next two weeks that would be great. There's talk of sending him to a nursing facility instead.

I think this may be really depressing for steve and possibly the care may be shoddy, I mean lets be real. Nurse Rachet still lives. So, a ramp would be fairly easy, and the molding in the doorways would have to be taken off and plastered. And the bathroom would need the most work for sure. A wall coming down perhaps I dunno.

But time is of the essence.

okay I may be jaded and the nursing facility isn't the worst place. Sorry for my bad attitude.

yeah home is def. a better place to heal..the house will need cleanup and organizing to have more space for Steve's wheelchair access..a start is help with the weeding on the side of the house or Steve will be trapped in the jungle..also a clean up in the backyard so we will have room for the ramp.I found a free electric hosp. bed (no mattress but works) in berkely this morning, hopefully we'll get someone with a truck/van to pick it up today before its gone..

Amy and I are more than willing to help. Unfortunately, we must depend on the kindness of those who so graciously allow us to hitch. We'll start in the BATHroom with full on hospital sterlization(and we'll bring him his very own super posh shower chair). I'll take care of the mess left in the garden. Will there be Wood or/ Concrete wheelchair ramps? (I've got moola and the know how...just no wheels.)

we will pick up the bed tomorrow and bring it over. We have a plan for the ramp, can go look for materials also....YES help would be needed probably looking at the weekend of Nov. 12- 13 to bust it out.
we'll have people with vehicles and can haul out trash etc. in yard that weekend - gotta get someone over there to look at the bathroom and what walls can come out. I have ideas on it. I am putting out the request for bodies over there that weekend to go for it.

PLUS a nursing facility could be a temporary stop before home. The dang bathroom is kind of a nightmare....the shower needs revamping and the doorway.

Steve's Dad told me today that the OT said he could use a portable toilet in the meantime while the bathroom is being converted. He could also use portable ramps as well but I don't know where you get these. Is there a hospital equipment store round there?

yeah a port. toilet would be easy until the "small scary bathroom" is redone/cleaned up..I was seriously scared when I opened that shower Melinda :O
There are portable ramps I've seen online you can order, not sure which ones would be best..there are many different types.
glad we have people to pick up that elec. bed tommorrow!

we got the bed, the guy said a regular mattress will work so we'll look for one - also we have some ideas for the bathroom, one of which includes breaking into the closet behind the shower, and then taking that whole shower out and replacing it with a bigger one....and changing the doorway and sink too.....SO IT's ON! next weekend - clearing yard, ramping and bathroom reno - ALL HANDS to deck and people with plumbing ability especially welcome

My brother may be able to help Steve out. Find me on Yahoo! Messenger or call me and I'll give you his info. If I was in Cali, you know I'd be there with you to help.

Let me know what sorts of things he needs for the remod.

haven't been around in awhile, but wanted to check with steve's progress. also, regarding interior and exterior remodel -- are the permit(s) in place and is there a licensed contractor that is familiar with code issues relating to ramp and ingress/egress? i'll be available to help.

thanks for the specs Rachel. SUNDAY the 13th is the WORK DAY "all work and no play" - around noon we;ll be there. EMAiL for the address....we'll be clearing debris from a pretty large yard, removing recycling; and picking up materials for a ramp up the back steps - possibly also beginning to build it.
